Kingsway senior apartments:  affordable luxury

When you take a tour of Kingsway Village Apartments in Schenectady, you’ll notice the things that make Kingsway unique in the Capital District’s retirement housing marketplace.

First, you’ll notice the full-service bank in the lobby.  Nancy A. Fedele, Director of Independent Living at Kingsway Community, explained that the branch of M&T Bank is open five days a week for the convenience of residents.  “An investment consultant is also available by appointment during banking hours,” she noted.

Another feature of Kingsway Village is the choice of six floor plans.  One and two bedroom options each include a sizable living room, fully-equipped kitchen and spacious bedrooms.  Waitress-style fine dining where family and friends are always invited, recreational and social programs, and transportation to scheduled medical appointments, shopping and outings are also part of the Kingsway Village experience.  There is also a Café and Marketplace where residents can have breakfast, lunch, a snack or purchase grocery items.

Over and above the routine amenities such as daily meals, weekly housekeeping and linen service, transportation and 24-hour staffing, there are a wide variety of additional features.  Opening the door to one of two large courtyards reveals a 9-hole miniature golf course that is open to residents and their guests.  An assortment of putters and colored golf balls are there for the choosing.  A 50-seat movie theater complete with large screen, rear projection and a popcorn machine is located on the second floor of the apartment building and residents can enjoy both matinee and evening movies.  Kingsway has joined with Sunnyview Rehabilitation to establish a satellite Wellness Center located right within the Village offering exercise and physical therapy.

The fee structure at Kingsway is unique to the industry.  In addition to a monthly rent, residents are required to invest in a program through M&T Financial Services.  An array of investment options is available, from extremely conservative fixed income offerings to more sophisticated alternatives for those seeking more growth potential.  Working closely with an advisor allows for the creation of a tailored and personalized portfolio.  The account is titled in the resident’s name and accrues interest. If the resident should decide to leave Kingsway Community for any reason, their money goes with them.  Fedele explained that “The fundamental principal of this new program is to guarantee that the account is always controlled by the resident.

The purpose of the account is to pay the cost of services when and if a resident transfers from the apartments to a higher level of care; either the assisted living facility or skilled nursing center.  Should a resident choose to leave Kingsway or eventually pass away, the entire amount is refunded to the resident or their estate.

The small details can make a big difference, explains Fedele.  “Kingsway is a very large campus yet our residents feel as if they are part of a small, close-knit community.  Many of the staff here at this relatively new facility have worked elsewhere on the campus for years.  This means that, no only are the staff familiar with “the Village”, but also with our other facilities as well.

The Village is part of Kingsway Community, a twenty-five acre campus offering three independent living apartment buildings, an assisted living facility and a nursing home.  There’s even a home care agency right on the campus.  “Having everything all on one campus is ideal for both residents and their families”, said Fedele.
