Mother’s Day in Schenectady: 5 Local Gift Ideas
Every May, many face a similar challenge: What to get your mom for Mother’s Day? You want it to be something she’ll love, something she’ll actually use, and something that won’t just collect dust in her home or apartment. But what is that, exactly? While we can’t tell for sure what your mom will love, here are five local gift ideas we think any mom, no matter her age, will like an awful lot.
Tickets to a Musical
Proctors recently released its 2022-23 show schedule, and it’s jam-packed with award-winning musicals. Is Mom a history buff? Hamilton tickets it is! Is she nostalgic for the ’60s? You can’t go wrong with Hairspray. A Temptations fan? Ain’t Too Proud is the answer. All of the above? Get her a 2022-23 season subscription for access to every show. If you want tickets to shows happening sooner than December, consider My Fair Lady or Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, which are coming to the Schenectady theater this spring.
A Locally Made Quilt
One of the makers currently selling her wares at Jay Street Collective is Delmar-based quilter Abby Kirkman. Not only does Abby make quality handmade quilts (which incorporate Upstate New York–inspired designs and color), but she also makes smaller quilted products, including pouches, pillows and totes.
A Spa Day
When was the last time your mom took time to pamper herself? Has it been a while? Then treat her to a relaxing afternoon at Sanctuary Massage. Located in Rotterdam, Sanctuary specializes in helping clients with autoimmune disorders and fibromyalgia through therapeutic and gentle massage techniques, so you know your mom will be taken care of, no matter the condition of her health.
Brunch and a Movie
Treat Mom to the oldest date day in the book: a meal and a movie. We’d recommend fairly new and definitely hip southern comfort food hotspot The Nest, which is located right on State Street and open Sundays from 10:30am-3pm. Brunch specialties such as strawberry shortcake waffles, fried green tomatoes, lobster eggs benedict, and chicken and waffles await. Then it’s over to Movieland 6 for the newest blockbuster. Check Bowtie’s website for an up-to-date list of what’s playing.
DIY Craft Kit
If your mom’s a lover of all things whimsical home décor, beaded earrings, or DIY projects, head straight for Bear and Bird Boutique + Gallery on State Street. We especially love their Goldenrod Hoop Needle Felting DIY Craft Kit, which will provide hours of crafting fun, but the quaint retailer has a whole online shop section dedicated to “Cool Mom Gifts,” where you’re sure to find the perfect gift for the perfect mom.
