Barbecues (also spelled “barbeques” and commonly shortened to BBQ) are a common piece of American summer tradition. Its roots can be traced back to the indigenous groups Christopher Columbus interacted with in the Caribbeans. From there, it has spread and grown to incorporate all sorts of traditions and trends.
Our guide will take an overhead look at the traditions of BBQ, as well as new trends that are emerging and going strong this summer.
Traditions of BBQ
With its long history, BBQ has an equally long list of traditions. The most long-lasting would be its defining characteristic: using live fire and smoke to cook food. This is the classic definition of BBQ, and those passionate about BBQ will say that it’s the only true BBQ. (Some areas of the world, including Schenectady, NY, where the Kingsway campus is nestled, interchange “BBQ” with “grilling” and “cookouts.” Even if you like to keep the definitions of those words separate, we can’t deny that they’ve all contributed to long-standing BBQ traditions.)
BBQ is not just a style of cooking but has grown to become a classic social gathering. BBQs can easily scale from a small and intimate get together to a big and boisterous block party. Several past US presidents have used BBQs to entertain guests, from celebrities to foreign dignitaries.
BBQs have also adapted to include all sorts of foods and dressings. Chicken, for example, became a common meat served at BBQs in the twentieth century. That’s hundreds of years after the first BBQs!
A few BBQ associations remain strong, even if BBQs have changed. BBQs are often enjoyed in the summer, when the weather is nice and everyone can enjoy the outdoors. Many BBQs take place around summer holidays. (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day are quite popular.)
And, most importantly, the food at BBQs promises to be delicious.
Upcoming BBQ Trends
Trends come and go (and the good ones stick around), but they are always interesting! There are several ongoing and up-and-coming trends in BBQ for 2025. Below are some of our favorites.
International Flare
Many BBQ experts predict that we’ll see more influence and fusions of global flavors. Korean BBQ is already popular on an international stage and will likely see that popularity grow. Meanwhile, Latin American BBQ is a newer style that adds flavors and cooking techniques that BBQ enthusiasts are excited for. These new flavors are offering new and interesting experiences, even for those who’ve “tried them all!”
Expanding the Menu
A greater variety of food can be found at BBQs nowadays. This includes wider ranges of meats, seafood, vegetarian options, side dishes, and fruits and vegetables. This trend is being driven by a few factors: accommodating more people and their diets, an interest in trying new food combinations, and adjusting for changing food costs. No matter the reason, we’re excited to see what new foods are added.
The Hot Dog Tower
Yes, you read that right. For anyone who hasn’t heard about this rising trend, imagine a tiered cupcake tray, but instead of cupcakes the tray is full of hot dogs and French fries. (Some also come with a tier of condiments so you can customize your hot dog for your tastes.) Hot dog towers are fun to both look at and eat through. They make for a great meal to share with family and friends.
